SEO Step One: Goal setting

SEO

We know that managing your own SEO can be challenging, but don't let that discourage you. The key to success is to establish clear goals before diving in headfirst. Your SEO objectives should align with your traffic and lead generation goals, industry, and target audience.

For instance, if you're new to SEO, it's wise to focus on building consistent traffic. Your goal framework could look like this:

  • Generate 300 visitors within 3 months

  • Write two blog posts per week

  • Target 10 keywords with a collective monthly search volume (SV) of 2,000 or more

Keep in mind that targeting keywords with a collective SV of 2,000 or more doesn't guarantee that you'll get that many visitors. However, it increases your chances of hitting your goal faster.

If you're aiming to attract a specific type of reader, your framework may look like this:

  • Research three competitors' top 5 ranking keywords

  • Identify where your content overlaps with theirs and what content topics they might be missing

  • Write content that is more informative and useful than anyone in your industry

Remember to choose a goal that is achievable given your current resources and schedule. Once you have a goal in place, you can select the SEO data gathering platforms that will help you measure your progress.
